Happy Traum

Blues Guitar Instructor

Happy Traum was smitten by American folk music as a teenager and began playing guitar and 5-string banjo. He was an active individual of the famous Washington Square/Greenwich Village folk scene of the 1950s and ’60s, and studied guitar with the renowned blues master, Brownie McGhee.

Over the past five decades he has performed extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia, and Japan, both as a soloist and as a member of numerous groups. His enthusiastic interest in traditional and modern music has brought him worldwide respect as a performer, author, editor, session artist, folklorist, teacher and recording artist.

Maybe Happy’s most crucial and long lasting musical contribution has been Homespun Tapes, which he and his wife, Jane, co-founded in 1967. This vibrant and growing company has a repertoire of more than 640 music lessons, and their products are distributed and offered around the world.

“Your products brought me to music. I started with Happy’s beginner guitar CD set, then basic fingerpicking. The lessons are excellent and accessible. My progress is slow but sure. Thanks again.”

“I love your tapes, especially Happy’s “Blues Bag.” It is amazing how much you can learn with the proper instruction, and finally I don’t have to be embarrassed to ask, “Would you do that again?” So this is just a great big congratulations and thank you for being there all these years with all of us students out here. Where would I be without you? I have no idea.”
